For advanced players ages 4 thru 13 with a qualified rating, you are invited to the very prestigious CalNorth Youth Chess Age Level Invitational Tournament.  This tournament is a 2-Day tournament with long time controls.  This will be held at two locations this year.  On Saturday February 3, the first 3 rounds will be held at the NorCal House of Chess in Fremont, CA.  For the final 2 rounds on Sunday February 4, the tournament will be held at the Newark Pavilion in Newark, CA.  Players who desire a longer time control should be playing in this tournament. 

 

The trophies are larger than the trophies in the regular Age Level tournament, and the winners of each Invitational Age group will in addition receive a gorgeous Cup trophy.

FROM 880 - Get off at the Fremont Boulevard (South) exit and go towards Grimmer Boulevard for .6 miles. Turn right at Grimmer Boulevard and go for .6 miles. Turn left at Osgood and it will be on the right.

PAIRINGS      STANDINGS

AGE DETERMINATION:  As of February 1. For example, if you turn 10 on February 1 you must compete in the 10-13 group.

SECTIONS: 4-9, 10-13. Players whose ages are 4-9 should have a minimum peak USCF rating of 1000, and players whose ages are between 10-13 should have a minimum peak USCF rating of 1300.

$75 standard entry. Online registration by Thursday night, February 1. After that, late entries are subject to an additional $25 fee. You must submit late online registration forms no later than 5 PM on Friday, February 2. We will not process any application sent after 5 PM on Friday, January 29. Late registrations will be accepted in person on Saturday morning February 3 before 8:45am.  A 1/2 point bye (missing a round for some reason) will be permitted for any round.  Maximum of one (1) 1/2 point bye. All other byes will be 0 points.  All 1/2 point byes must be requested by Round 2 Saturday, February 3. All registrants will be posted after January 15 here.

No refunds after Saturday, January 27.  However, if staff is notified before the tournament starts of an emergency where you cannot attend, an 80% credit of what you paid will be provided for a future Success Chess School/Weibel Chess tournament.

 

ROUNDS AND TIME CONTROL: G/120 with 5 second delay. Saturday 9am, 1:30pm, 6pm; Sunday 9am, 1:30pm

TOURNAMENT NOTES: 
-  This tournament will use the CalChess Scholastic Regulations, Section 8.06 - While a player’s game is in progress, all electronic devices in his/her possession MUST be turned off at all times. This includes music-playing devices and electronic noise-cancelling headphones/ear-buds. The only exceptions to this rule are chess clocks, approved electronic scorekeeping devices, necessary medical devices, and any other device approved by the Chief TD. Penalties for using or possessing any electronic device that has not been turned off may include game forfeiture and/or expulsion from the tournament. Electronic devices need to put away (not on the person), i.e. in the player's backpack, chess bag, etc.
- This tournament will use the CalChess Scholastic Regulations, Section 2.18, regarding late arrivals and forfeits - 30 minutes from the announced start time or 15 minutes from the actual start time, whichever comes later. 

AWARDS:.  
Eight (8) place trophies in each age level section. The First Place winner in the 4-9 Age Group will also receive the Kirshner Cup, named after Dr. Alan Kirshner.  The First Place winner in the 10-13 Age Group this year will receive the Kerry Lawless Cup, named after the author of the ChessDryad website and a great contributor to the Northern California chess scene for over 30 years. Special Age Level logo chess medals for all competitors that do not receive a trophy. If there is a tie for first place in the 4-9 or 10-13 age groups we will have a blitz playoff (5 minute chess) for the first place trophy and Cup trophy for that age. There will be scholarships for the first and second place winners as well in each section, courtesy of the American Youth Chess Foundation. $150 in scholarship money for those that are in first place, and $100 in scholarship money for those in second place. Other prizes as well TBD.

All those tying for first place will be declared CalNorth Age Level Champions and a new plate will be sent to be placed on the trophy they received.
