SIMULTANEOUS CHESS:

OPEN TO ADULTS AS WELL AS SCHOLASTIC PLAYERS

Saturday night from 7 PM: Challenge an International Master on the staff of Success Chess.  25 boards maximum per IM.  Play either IM Ricardo de Guzman, IM John Grefe or IM (pending) Dmitry Zilberstein ---- $10 per board or free board if you stay in the Crowne Plaza Hotel .  Awards to draws and wins!

 

LOCATION:

San Jose Convention Center, Parkside Hall A & B, 180 Park Avenue, San JoseÑnext to the Tech Museum of Innovation. Rooms available at the Crown Plaza Hotel, adjacent to the Parkside Halls, 282 Almaden Blvd.  Special room rate of $85 includes all day parking. Call 1-408-998-0400 and mention you are with the chess tournament to obtain the special tournament rate that includes the free parking. DIRECTIONS:

From the North Bay: Take US 101 South to the Guadalupe Parkway exit south.  Take the Park Avenue exit and head west.  Parkside Hall is just ahead about 1/4 mile, right to  The Tech Museum of Innovation.

From the East Bay:  Take I-880 south to the Guadalupe Parkway exit south or take I-680 south (which will turn into I-280 after US101) to the 87 north.  Take the Santa Clara exit and turn right (head east).  Make a right onto Almaden Blvd. And then a left onto Park Avenue.  Parkside Hall is just ahead about 1/4 mile, right next to the Tech Museum of Innovation.

GENERAL INFO: 

All players must be members of the United States Chess Federation. Non-members may join when they send in their entry form. We will run the tournament according to the USCF Rule Book and any modifications made for scholastic competition in Northern California (http://www.calnorthyouthchess.org/CalChessStates/Regulations.html)

ENTRY FEE:

Checks made payable to CalNorth Youth Chess,

Before November 1: K & K-3 Divisions=$15*, All Other Divisions=$20*

From November 1 until January 1: K & K-3 Divisions=$20*, All Other Divisions=$25*

From January 1 until April 13: K & K-3 Divisions=$25**, All Other Divisions=$30**. A special academic school team rate is available: coaches may deduct $5 from each entry if four or more players as long as checks are received in one package with all information completed no later than Friday, 4/8. After 4/13 all entries are $50. A special late registration will take place at the San Jose Convention Center in Parkside Room 1 on Friday, 4/15 from 6 to 7:30 PM. Registrations will be accepted on Saturday, 4/16, only after the first round has begun and a zero point bye will be given for that round. A $10 fee will be charged for any changes requested after 7:00 PM on 4/15. Only a one half round bye (half point non-rated draw) will be permitted if requested before 4/16. Any other byes (missing a round by request) will be listed a non-rated loss. Please check our internet site for confirmation of your entry and to see if you are in the correct division. SECTIONS:

KINDERGARTEN, K-3 SECTIONS: PRIMARY SCHOOL VARSITY--open championship & PRIMARY SCHOOL JUNIOR VARSITY--players that have a USCF rating under 700 or are unrated --Will be on Saturday, 4/16. 5 rounds (each player will have a maximum of 30 minutes per round: Game/30), rounds at 9:15, 10:45, LUNCH, 1:00, 2:30, 4:00 with awards to follow completion of each section. Please arrive 1/2 hour before the first round to check the posted list to see if your application arrived.

K-6 SECTIONS: ELEMENTARY SCHOOL VARSITY--open championship & ELEMENTARY SCHOOL JUNIOR VARSITY--players that have a USCF rating under 800 or are unrated. K-8 SECTIONS: JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY--open championship & JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL JUNIOR VARSITY--players that have a USCF rating under 900 or are unrated. K-12 SECTIONS: HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY--open championship & HIGH SCHOOL JUNIOR VARSITY--players that have a USCF rating under 1000 or are unrated:  Will be on both Saturday and Sunday, 4/16 and 4/17, 6 rounds (each player has a maximum of 75 minutes per round: Game/75), Saturday rounds at 9:15, 12:00, LUNCH, 3, Sunday rounds at 9:00, 11:45, LUNCH, 2:45 with awards to follow completion of each section. Please arrive 1/2 hour before the first round to check the posted list to see if your application arrived.

PRIZES: 

Trophies to top 20 players in each Section. In the case of a tie the US Chess Federation tiebreak method will be used. (All first place winnersÑties included--will also receive a copy of the award winning Chess Mentor Instruction Program and a Saitek Chess Clock II.) Trophies will also go to the best in each specific grade and medals to best in each rating class after Top 20 trophies are awarded for each section.  We will give only one trophy or medal per player. Trophies will be awarded to the top 8 schools in all but the Kindergarten division (team score=4 best from each school. The 4 top point recipients and their coach of first and second place teams will receive a plaque. First place Varsity Division winners will receive the title of Regional Champion.  NOTE: Pins to every participant.

NOTES:

1. All games in K-6 Varsity, Junior High School (K-8) and High School (K-12) Sections must be recorded. Players should bring chess clocks. 2. In the last round players from the same school may face each other to determine individual championships even if it affects team championship prospects. 3.  Limited number of multi-colored tournament logo commemorative T-shirts for sale: Pre-purchase=$12 At tournament=$15. Long sleeve T-shirts can be specially ordered in advance=$20. National Chess Equipment will have chess equipment and books available for purchase at discount prices at the tournament. 5. CALNORTH REGIONAL SCHOLASTIC BLITZ TOURNAMENT: 

Friday 4/15, 7-11 PM, San Jose Convention Center PARKSIDE ROOM 1 -- $10 checks made payable to CalNorth Youth Chess. On site registration on Friday, 4/15 from 6 to 6:30 PM. Trophies for top 2 places + 1 for best in K-3, 4-6, 7-8, 9-12 grades. Hans Poschmann will direct this tournament.

CALNORTH REGIONAL SCHOLASTIC BUGHOUSE TOURNAMENT:  Friday 4/15, 3:30 PM-7 PM, San Jose Convention Center PARKSIDE ROOM 2 -- $10 checks per team made payable to CalNorth Youth Chess. On site registration on Friday, 4/15 from 2:30 to 3:00 PM--based upon space limitation.  Two trophies for top team + 2 for best team in K-3, 4-6, 7-8, 9-12 grades. Highest grade of either team member will determine section for award.  Director TBA

COACHES & PARENTS MEETING: 

Saturday 4/16, 9:45 to 10:45 AM, PARKSIDE ROOM 2.  All coaches, teachers and parents are welcome to come to discuss the tournament and other scholastic chess issues.

WORKSHOPS FOR PARENTS, COACHES AND GUESTS:

A series of special scholastic chess workshops will be held on Saturday and Sunday in Parkside Room 2Ñdetails will be announced at a later date.
