Weibel Chess
has become the model program for Success
Chess School,
a non-profit corporation. SCS has over 50 programs in the San Francisco
Bay Area and over 1500 children studying chess using the Weibel method.
Other chess programs have also adopted innovations first used at Weibel
Chess.
At Weibel Chess children
make the choice as to whether to participate in the Club or the Team. We
provide instruction for half the period and the children play chess under
tournament conditions during the second half of the sessions. Weibel Team
members are required to compete in at least four United States Chess Federation
matches each year as well as attend the CalChess State Scholastic Championships
in May. Team members may also compete against other school or club teams
during the year. Team members turn in homework weekly. Weibel Club members
have no requirements beyond learning how to play great chess and having
fun. They attend the Club sessions to improve their tactics and strategy and
to play chess. They may select to do our online homework for extra credit.
All children receive
points for their activities, including winning, drawing or losing their
games. We award titles such as King based upon the points they receive. At the
end of the school year we have an awards
banquet. All students receive certificates stating their
ranks. In addition, they receive chess trophies. The students love the
door prize drawing because we give away large amounts of chess paraphernalia.
Our instructors favorite part of the evening is the food the parents supply.
