SUBJECT: Individual and Team results from CalChess State Grade Level Championships


The California Chess State Grade Level Championships took place at Delta Community College in Stockton on Saturday, May 15 and Sunday, May 16. Fourth through twelfth grade students competed both days playing six rounds of chess for a maximum time of two hours per round. Kindergarten through third grade students competed only on Sunday, completing four rounds of chess with a maximum time of one hour per round.


Weibel Elementary School players shinned throughout this tournament that drew 265 players. In the Kindergarten division Hansen Tsai and Ankita Roy of Weibel tied with Tau Jeng of Fremontās Challenger School for 3rd place. Weibel won the first place team trophy.

In the Second Grade division Weibelās Brian Tsui took third place with 3.5 out of 4 possible points. Brian Chao and Hans Tsai of Weibel tied for 4th place and Brian Chung took home a tenth place trophy. Weibel won the first place team trophy.

In the Third Grade, Weibelās Sharon Tseung tied for first place winning all four of her games. Eric Wei of Weibel tied for 3rd place with fellow classmates Jessica Hsueh and Wesley Rou bringing home 9th and 10th place trophies. Weibel won the first place team trophy.

In the Fourth Grade, Weibel took a second place trophy because of the four out of six wins of both Charles Fang and Ankur Agrawal who tied for 3rd place. Jonathan Jew of Mission San Jose Elementary School also had four wins.

In the Fifth Grade, Timothy Ma of Weibel won 1st place with Ricky Yu of Mission Valley Elementary School and Neil Chao of Weibel tying for third. Other trophiy winners from Fremont included Weibelās Bob Lian, Andrew Hu, Grace Lin and Mission San Joseās Wesley Kwang. Weibel took the first place Team trophy with Mission San Jose Elementary School tying for 3rd place.

In Sixth Grade, Weibelās players had a clean sweep. Alexander Tseung and Victor Wei both went undefeated with Alexander taking first place and Victor in second. Stephen Tu took third place. Edward Chang of Mission San Jose won the 6th place trophy. Weibel once again won the first place team award.

Former Weibel student Nathan Lee of Fremont who now attends the Chinese Christian School won second place in the 7th grade.

Akash Deb of Union City took 1st place in the 8th grade.

In Ninth Grade, Jeffrey Lonsdale of Mission San Jose High School, and formerly from Mission San Jose Elementary School tied for 3rd place.

Mission San Jose High School student Micah Fisher-Kirshner received his fifth California Chess State championship title by winning this yearās 11th grade division.
