Chess was an after school activity at Weibel Elementary School, 45135 S. Grimmer Blvd., Fremont, CA 94539. One hundred and seventy students of the 840 that attend this kindergarten through sixth grade public school participated in the program during the 2019-2020 school year.

OUR PROGRAM CLOSED DOWN ON MARCH 13, 2020 A DAY BEFORE THE FREMONT SCHOOL DISTRICT CEASED HAVING FACE TO FACE CLASSES DUE TO COVID-19. When the schools reopened I had decided that it was time to retire. I was 83 and had run the program for 33 years.

In February, 2022 Bay Area Chess, a non-profit chess business resumed chess at Weibel with my blessing. Bay Area Chess will provide an excellent chess program but it will never be the same Weibel Chess. Our program was an integal part of the school and functioned under the auspices of the Parent Teachers Organization and received the full support of the previous school administration. This is no longer the case.

In 1999 the U.S. Chess Federation in their children's magazine published my article on how Weibel Chess began in 1988 and how it was structured. I updated the article a bit. In 2022 I added some notes in parantheses to the original article. I thought that if a person or a group were looking to create a successful school chess program my experience could be very helpful. If you have any questions you can contact me at alan.kirshner@comcast.net My article can be found at this link: http://www.CalNorthYouthChess.org/WeibelChess/HistoryandStructure1999.html
